2018 - Sadly almost everyone around the world knows someone who fights against cancer. Even more sadly, lots of people know someone who has lost the battle against the devastating disease. Today is World Cancer Day. All around the world people are joining forces to beat cancer.
Saving lives
World Cancer Day was established by the Charter of Paris on February 4th, 2000. It aims at saving lives by raising awareness and educating people about cancer. World Cancer Day is also meant to pressure governments to take action in order to prevent the disease.
Countries must not stand alone
Scientists can profit from knowledge from around the world. Therefore the Charter of Paris established World Cancer Day in its article 10:
‘Article 10
Since cancer knows no boundaries, and individual countries cannot address the challenges of cancer in isolation, a new cooperative approach to research, advocacy, prevention and treatment must be established.
(…)
Recognizing the declaration by all appropriate institutions that February 4 shall be marked as "World Cancer Day" so that each year, the Charter of Paris will be in the hearts and minds of people around the world.’
360 trivial fact
Although cancer still is one of the most deadly diseases in the world, the likelihood of dying from it steadily drops. In the US for instance, five year survival rates for all cancers combined is about 66 percent. Some cancers, such as breast and prostate cancer even meet a 90 percent surviving rate.
