1962 -

On the 28th of November in the year 1962, the beloved princess of the Netherlands, Wilhelmina Helena Pauline Maria, passed away. She was born on August 31 in the year 1880 and was queen of the Netherlands from the 23th of November 1890 until the 4th of September 1948. This made her the longest reigning queen in the Netherlands.

Wilhelmina had three half-brothers, Willem, Maurits and Alexander, who were planned to become king, but they died before their father king Willem III passed away. Wilhelmina became queen when she was under eighteen. That meant that her mother, Princess Emma, ruled in name of her daughter until Wilhelmina was declared of age to rule the country herself.

World War II
Wilhelmina ruled The Netherlands during both World War I and World War II. When the second World War broke Wilhelmina and her family fled to England, by demand of the Dutch cabinet. With her speeches for Radio Oranje she became a symbol of resistance against the Germans. On the 13th of March in the year 1945, Wilhelmina returned to the Netherlands, where she stayed in Breda until the whole country was freed from the Germans.

Trivial fact
Wilhelmina was a great animal lover. She spent most of her summers playing with ponies, horses, donkeys, chickens and birds in Palace ‘Het Loo’ in Apeldoorn. Although, her biggest love was her dog, the Irish setter Swell, that she got when she was only nine years old.
