2014 -

A still life painting by Vincent van Gogh was sold for a record price on November 5, 2014. The painting, named ‘Still Life, Vase with Daisies and Poppies’, that Van Gogh painted in 1890, was sold for 61.8 million dollars.

Anxiety disorder
Van Gogh made the painting in June 1890 while visiting his friend Dr. Paul Gachet in Auvers-sur-Oise, France. He just got out of a clinic, where he stayed for a year, because he suffered from anxiety disorders. During his stay with Dr. Gachet, he painted a number of different flowers in vases, including Vase with Daisies and Poppies. In this period of time, Van Gogh painted a lot. Unfortunately, his anxiety disorders got worse and he killed himself only months later.

Theo van Gogh
Vincent was very close with his brother, Theo. They wrote each other many letters when Vincent was going through a rough time. Only half a year after Vincent’s death, Theo also died on the effects of syphilis. The paintings stayed in the family until they were given to Van Gogh’s museums.

Trivial fact
Did you know van Gogh painted around 900 paintings during his life? Unfortunately for him, he only became famous after his death. He was constantly struggling with poverty and sold only one painting while he was alive: The Red Vineyard. The painting was sold for 400 francs in Belgium, which is way less than the prices you’d pay for his painting now.
