1913 -

Between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans lies one of the seven wonders of the modern world, according to the American Society of Civil Engineers. When buying a 'ticket', one's got at least six to eight hours to behold the modern miracle, which is the Panama Canal. On the 17th of November, 1913, the first fortunate people sailed their ship across its 77-km length.

Building the Canal was first attempted by the French, but turned out to be more problematic than they had thought. The excavation proceeded slowly. Thousands of people lost their lives due to the reigning illnesses in the jungles. A few years later, the Americans continued the work and managed to turn the project into a fully working canal, which still is an important shortcut for ships.

'Gate' Gatun
In the centre of the Panama Canal lies Lake Gatun at about 26 meters above both sea levels. It serves as a water reservoir and is an essential part in the existence of the Canal. In order to get to Lake Gatun, ships must pass three locks to reach the necessary altitude.
The priciest one-way ticket is currently 200 thousand euros. But the alternative, sailing around South America, is a much greater expense, considering that route is more than twice as long.

360 trivial fact
The lowest fare ever paid to cross the canal was paid by the American Richard Halliburton. He paid only 36 cents to pass the canal; swimming.
