1989 -

It seemed impossible for a long time, but today in 1989 the divided German city of Berlin opened its borders. The Berlin Wall separated the city into West and East Berlin since august 1961. Complete families were torn apart by it.

138 people killed
Berlin was split up in several control-areas after WWII. Each zone occupied by one of the four Allied powers that defeated the Nazis. The Soviet Union constructed it to separate the zones controlled by France, Britain and America from their ‘own’ area. The following years people in the eastern part of Berlin weren’t allowed to move to the west. At least 138 people were killed trying to cross over. ‘Mr Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall!’ were lines in a speech made by US President Reagan, in 1987 addressing the Russian leader. The wall was after all a symbol of the Cold War. It would last another two years.

Günter Schabowski
November 9th, 1989 is recognized as the day of the fall of the Berlin Wall. A press conference was held by Günter Schabowski, a political leader in the GDR. He stated that every German citizen was free to cross the border from that moment on. Officially demolition started in June 1990.

360 trivial fact
West Berliners saw some benefits concerning the Wall. It was an ideal way of getting rid of rubbish. They just threw garbage over the wall. Nobody would make them go get it back.
