1920 -

We all use the proverb “being Switzerland” from time to time, but when did Switzerland become a neutral country? It all started on this day in the year 1920, when The League of Nations officially recognized Switzerland's neutrality.

Before World War I
Switzerland was divided into different areas where German-, French-, and Italian-speaking people lived in communities until Napoleon unified the country as the Helvetic Republic in 1778. The Swiss people weren’t amused by Napoleon’s rules and they demanded a new constitution when the French occupation ended in 1803. For a century, Switzerland enjoyed its growing economy, until a huge amount of money needed to be invested in military mobilization to protect the borders during World War I.

The League of Nations
After the war, the international organization ‘The League of Nations’, was formed at the Versailles Peace Conference. On the 13th of February, 1920, a majority of this organization voted for the perpetual neutrality of Switzerland. Since the country became neutral and its relatively stable economy and politics, the headquarters of the League of Nations is established in the Swiss City Geneva. Despite, it has been 500 years since the Swiss lost their last military battle against the French, men in Switzerland between the ages of 18 and 34 still have part-time military service for defense purposes.

360 trivial fact
In Switzerland, people are allowed to adopt guinea pigs, but only by the two, since it’s forbidden to have only one.
