1972 -

Who didn’t play the game Pong? On the 29th of November in the year 1972, this first commercially successful video game was released by developers Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney, the founders of the company Atari.

A paddle moving up and down
The game simulates table tennis in a two-dimensional sports game. In Pong, players use paddles to hit a ball by moving the paddle vertically on the left or right side of the screen. You can play against a computer opponent or you can play with another opponent by adding a second paddle to the game. The goal is to reach ten points before your opponent does. You earn points when the other fails to return the ball with the paddle. Simplicity does the trick.

Bushnell and Dabney both invested around 250 dollars to create their game developing company, Atari. Five years after the release of Pong, the company was worth more than 28 million dollars. Ten years and the launches of the other successful video games later, Atari is worth more than 2 billion dollars. Jackpot! Therefore, many people feel Bushnell is the father of the gaming industry.

Trivial fact
Pong was never invented for public use. Bushnell, told new employee Allan Alcorn that he needed to create a simple electronic table tennis to practise his game development. Both Bushnell and Dabney liked the game so much that they decided to sell it to companies they had contracts with for other games.
