1912 -

Egypt's 18th dynasty knew a very powerful and influential woman, Nefertiti, who was an Egyptian queen and ruled by the side of Pharaoh Akhenaten. The couple reigned as near equals over Egypt in a prosperous time.

On the 7th of December in 1912, an amazing sculpture showing Nefertiti was found in an old workplace in El-Amarna, Egypt. Admittedly, there are great works of art all over the world, but this bust of the ancient queen was created during her life and is thereby over three thousand years old.

Nefertiti was a remarkable woman who lived around 1340 BC and took on some of the Pharaoh's tasks from her husband. After he passed away, Nefertiti disappeared from modern history records. There is an ongoing discussion as to what happened to her after this event. Certain evidence indicates that she ruled as Pharaoh for a small period of time, but what happened afterwards remains unknown. Despite this mystery, a part of her history was unravelled thanks to the bust. It told historians a lot about her life and land.

More than three thousand years after its creation, the bust is still astonishing and a precious property of the Neues Museum in Berlin, where it is exhibited. It’s known for its stunningly correct facial proportions, showing the Egyptians' craftmanship and is still seen as a representation of the female beauty and power.

360 trivial fact
The name Nefertiti literally means: 'the beautiful woman has come'.
