2010 -

‘It’s been a bit of a long shift’. Foreman Luis Urzúa was right. His team of miners was rescued today in 2010 after 69 days under the Chilean ground. The Copiapó mining accident began with a cave-in at the San José copper-gold mine. Thirty-three men were trapped, 700 meters underground.

The mining company Codelco started a search mission. Boreholes were drilled and after seventeen days they found a note, taped to a drill: ‘estamos bien en el regugio, los 33’. In English; ‘We are well in the shelter, the 33 of us.’ A rescue mission started in which a dozen corporations from around the world, Chilean government and the NASA space agency cooperated. The whole world was watching because not only food, but also cameras were sent to the men. They sent and also received messages.

Camp Hope
The first 17 days the men survived on rations of two spoons of tuna, two sips of milk and a cracker every 48 hours. They found shelter in tunnels and had access to some 2 kilometres of open tunnel. At the surface a tent city was made by family and friends of the miners, Camp Hope. Family members waited and prayed for their loved ones. 1 billion people worldwide watched the men being rescued, one by one, in a specially built capsule.
