1512 -

Michelangelo Buonarroti is widely known as a famous Italian artist who lived in the Renaissance. The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, which is regarded as one of his masterpieces, is exhibited to the public for the first time on the 1th of November 1512. A solemn holy day in the Catholic Church, called All Saint’s Day.

Four years of his life
Michelangelo was asked to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in 1508, but the painting must be spread all over the ceiling, which is forty by fourteen meters long. You could imagine that it took him many years to paint the whole ceiling. In the end it took him only four years to make the painting, including one long break in 1510.

Becoming an artist
Michelangelo was born on 6 March 1475 in a small village, called Caprese and grew up during the Renaissance movement. His father was a government administrator. Michelangelo decided to become an artist at the age of thirteen. Lorenzo de’ Medici, who was the ruler of the Florentine Republic during the Italian Renaissance, admired his work and helped Michelangelo becoming the famous artist as we know him today.

360 trivial fact
Michelangelo’s house of birth in Caprese is still open to visitors. The small village in the Italian province, Arezzo, has only 1647 inhabitants. However, the place attracts thousands of tourists every year, just because the house where Michelangelo was born is still standing.
