1935 - Luciano Pavarotti was an Italian opera singer. He was born October 12, 1935 and died at the age of 71 on September 6, 2007. He was one of the most commercially successful tenors of all time. Luciano Pavarotti was known for his interpretation of bel canto operas, Verdi roles and Puccini works like ‘E lucevan le stelle’ (The stars were shimmering) and ‘Nessum Dorma’ (none shall sleep). His last performance with ‘Nessum Dorma’ was at the 2006 Winter Olympics, where he was lip-sincing his own prerecording.
The Three Tenors
Luciano Pavarotti was one of the first opera singers who crossed over into popular music. He gained worldwide fame for the quality of his tone and made lots of recordings of individual arias, as well as complete opera’s. With the Three Tenors he performed with Plácido Domingo and José Carreras. The trio was brought together by Italian producer Mario Dradi. The recording of the Three Tenors’ debut concert became the best-selling classical album of all time.
Pavarotti & Friends
Pavarotti was also known for his charity work. He hosted benefit concerts under the name Pavarotti & Friends, on behalf of victims of tragedy. He worked closely with important people like Diana, Princess of Wales and Jon Bon Jovi.
360 trivial fact
There are clear parallels between Pavarotti and Justin Bieber. During his career Pavarotti earned the title ‘The King of Cancellations’. Just like his much younger colleague he frequently backed out of performances.
