2000 -

On November 7th in the year 2000, the beloved Queen of Denmark, Ingrid of Sweden, passed away at the age of 90. Ingrid of Sweden was born on March 28th 1910 in Stockholm. Her parents were the King and Queen of Sweden; therefore she lived in the Royal Palace in Stockholm until she got married to her cousin, the future King of Denmark, Frederike IX.

After they got married, Ingrid moved to Denmark in the Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. She learned the Danish language and gave birth to three girls, named Margrethe (later Queen Margrethe II of Denmark), Benedikte and Anne-Marie. Ingrid and Frederike became King and Queen on April 20th of 1947, after King Christian X died.

The Danish royal family was very loved by the people of Denmark, especially during World War II. The family decided to remain in Denmark, while the country was in possession of the Germans. During this occupation, the Danish people often saw Ingrid in Copenhagen, when she was riding her bicycle or taking a walk with her eldest daughter, Margrethe.

Trivial fact
Ingrid of Sweden was a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, who ruled over the United Kingdom and India between 1837 and 1901. Victoria’s seventh son named Prince Arthur, who was the Duke of Connaught, got a daughter named Margaret of Connaught. Margaret married the future King of Sweden, named Gustav VI Adolf of Sweden. They got five children; four boys and one girl: Ingrid.
