2012 -

Hurricane Sandy hit New York City on October 29, 2012, causing enormous damage to the city. Sandy was a Category 3 storm at its peak and still a Category 2 Storm when it hit the coast of the United States of America. New York City began taking precautions on October 26. Airports and bridges were closed, bus terminals were shut down and subway, bus and commuter rail services were suspended by Governor Andrew Cuomo. Entrances and grates were covered before Sandy arrived. It didn’t help, the tunnels still flooded.

State of emergency
Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered public schools to close and called for a mandatory evacuation of the areas near Coastlines and waterways. Even parts of Manhattan were cleared. New York City opened more than 76 evacuation shelters, 200 National Guard troops were employed in the city. 2.1 million people throughout the state suffered a power outage for days. NYU Langone Medical Centre had to evacuate patients, due to a failure of the backup generators.
After New York, Sandy moved northward. In total Sandy affected 24 US states. Canada was also severely damaged. The storm dissolved above Canada on October 31. Damage is estimated at almost 72 billion USD. More than 110 people were killed.

360 trivial fact
The New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street closed for two days during the storm. This was the first time that happened since 1888, when the Stock Exchange closed during a blizzard.
