1923 -

Today in 1923 history was made. A story almost everybody loves began. October 16, 1923 Walt Disney and his brother Roy founded the Disney Brother Cartoon Studio. Later Roy suggested to change the name to Walt Disney Studio. They started with Alice’s Wonderland, a series about a girl in a cartoon world. But four years later they decided to make an all-cartoon series, starring Walt’s first original character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

Setback
It wasn’t an immediate success. Oswald was owned by its distributor, Winkler Pictures. Disney only made a few hundred dollars. Winkler’s husband Charles Mintz took over business and wanted the Disney Studio’s as well. When he failed to take over, he hired away four of Disney’s most important animators.

Mickey Mouse was born
Disney had to recover and came up with the idea of a mouse character. Mickey Mouse was born. Mickey starred in Disney’s first sound film; Steamboat Willie. It was an instant smash hit. Cartoons in colour followed, as well as feature-length animated films. ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ premiered in December 1937.
WWII slowed down development, but after the war Walt Disney kept on building his imperium, never satisfied with what he already accomplished. Walt wanted to branch out to amusement parks, developing a completely new phenomenon; Disneyland. Walt Disney Studio established itself as a leader in film production and theme park industries.
