2018 -

It’s hard to imagine, but New Year’s was not always celebrated on the edge of December 31 and January 1. It’s only since 1582 that January 1 was instituted as the first day of the year. That was the year our Gregorian calendar was introduced.

Janus
January was named after Janus, the Roman god of beginnings. Janus had two faces, which allowed him to look into the past and into the future. Not all regions in the world thought of January 1 as the first day of the year. Germanic people for instance celebrated Yule around December 21, the shortest day of the year. Other cultures celebrated the New Year on a day that carried more religious significance, such as December 25. Pope Gregory XIII re-established January 1 as New Year’s Day.

Traditional food
In most countries around the world people celebrate New Year’s Eve on the evening of December 31, continuing into the early hours of January 1. Traditions coming with the party vary, but most traditions involve food. Ring-shaped pastries are popular, a sign that the year has come full circle. Scandinavian people eat pudding with an almond in the middle. When you find the nut, you earn 12 months of good fortune.

360 trivial fact
In South Korea everyone becomes a year older on January 1. They are considered one year old when they are born (it’s their first living year) and every new calendar-year their age increases.
