1944 -

Today is a special day for one of Hollywood's greatest. Michael Douglas was born today, in 1944, the American actor, director and producer who won an Academy Award for producing One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest and another one for his role as Gordon Gekko in Oliver Stone's Wall Street.

Son of actors
It was no surprise to anyone that young Michael decided to become an actor. His mum (Diana Dill) and dad (Kirk Douglas) were both actors as well. His first significant role came in the TV series The Streets of San Francisco, from 1972 to 1976. Lots of successes would follow, like Romancing the Stone, Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct. Author and critic Rob Edelman described Douglas' roles as: 'Everyman who must contend with, and be victimized by, women and their raging, psychotic sexuality.'

Catherine Zeta-Jones
Today is also the birthday of Catherine Zeta-Jones, Michael Douglas' wife. Zeta-Jones is also an actress and was born exactly 25 years apart from her husband. They married in 2000. 'I want to father your children', were Michael's words when he met Catherine for the first time. And he did; they have two children together, Dylan Michael (2000) and Carys Zeta (2003).

360 trivial fact
Douglas produced and starred in the romantic adventure comedy Romancing the stone. One of his co-stars was Danny de Vito. It was far from the first time the two men met. They had been friends since the 1960's, when they shared an apartment.
