1933 -

On the 5th of January in the year 1933, workers started removing 3 million cubic feet of soil. On this day, the construction of the now famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco began.

A plan was made
The idea of building a bridge between San Francisco Bay and San Francisco first came in 1849, during the Gold Rush Boom. Philosophers realized that San Francisco Bay would increase in value when it was directly connected to San Francisco city. In 1869 a plan was made to build a bridge that would create a 400-foot long passage as a connection between San Francisco Bay with the southern end of Main County.

The building began
Former engineering student and San Francisco Bulletin journalist, James Wilkins, came with the idea of a 3000-feet center span bridge that would cost around 100 million dollars. However, bridge engineers O’Shaugnessey and Strauss said they could build a 4000-feet center span bridge for less. After The Bank of America agreed to fund the project in order to help the local economy, the building of the bridge began. On the 27th of May in 1937, the bridge was officially opened for traffic. San Francisco celebrated for a week; 200.000 people walked, ran and danced over the Golden Gate Bridge to celebrate the opening.

360 trivial fact
The bridge is very popular in films. No other bridge has collapsed so many times in the movies, as the Golden Gate Bridge has.
