1908 -

The south of Italy shook and shivered today, in the year 1908. An earthquake and tsunami destroyed the Italian cities Messina and Reggio di Calabria. The earthquake was as strong as 7.1 on the moment magnitude scale. Ten minutes after, a 12-meter tsunami swept in. The double disaster resulted in a devastating 80.000 casualties and left more than a hundred thousand people homeless.

Messina destroyed
The earthquake destroyed Messina's historical city centre, the tsunami shattered the city Reggio di Calabria and dozens of nearby coastal towns. The earthquake was one of the strongest quakes measured in history. Subsequently it caused almost the highest number of earthquake-casualties. Ironically lots of citizens in Messina fled to the seafront, in order to escape the danger of their collapsing homes. They were swept away by the tsunami waves, that destroyed the Reggio seafront.

Tsunami unrelated to earthquake
It was long assumed that the tsunami was caused by a seafloor displacement, during the earthquake. However, research suggests that an underwater landslide triggered the tsunami. The landslide was probably unrelated to the earthquake. After the disaster, survivors were relocated throughout Italy. Others were forced to immigrate to the United States. In the 1950's families still lived in wooden barracks that provided temporary shelter for the homeless survivors.

360 trivial fact
The town of Messina was, besides the disaster in 1908, also struck by an Allied bombardment during WW2, in 1943. The two disasters give Messina its title 'the city without memory.'
