1990 -

Japan officially got a new emperor, today in 1990. Crown Prince Akihito was installed to the Chrysanthemum Throne on November 12, 1990. However, he was already practicing Japanese emperorship since January 7, 1989, the day his father and Emperor Hirohito died. Akihito is the 125th Emperor of Japan.

The only emperor in the world
Tsugunomiya Akihito was born December 23, 1933. He was separated from his parents at the age of 3. According to tradition he was raised and educated by chamberlains and tutors. He was the fifth child, but eldest son of Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako. The Japanese ruler is the only monarch in the world with the title emperor. All emperors are direct descendants of Japan’s first emperor Jimmu who lived circa 660 BC.

Historical events
Akihito is a modern acting emperor. He was the first Japanese crown prince to marry a commoner, his empress-to-be Michiko. He’s also the first emperor to deliver a speech about his health. He expressed his fears about his health affecting his ability to fulfil his duties. That’s why the Japanese government approved a historical legislation that permits Emperor Akihito to abdicate the throne. Of course, since that day in 2017, everybody speculates about the day the first emperor will step down.

360 trivial fact
The Sokui-no-Rei enthronement ceremony in 1990 was attended 2,500 dignitaries from 158 countries. The ceremony only lasted about 30 minutes, but cost the Japanese people about 80 million US dollars.
