1992 -

It feels like you’re part of a thriller when you set foot on the island in San Francisco Bay; Alcatraz Island. It was once a military fortification, a military prison and a federal prison. Nowadays you can visit the island. Today in 1972 the first guided tour on Alcatraz took place.

Notorious criminals
Alcatraz and history go hand in hand. For instance, Alcatraz was once home to of America’s most notorious criminals. Amongst others, Al ‘Scarface’ Capone, kidnapper George ‘Machine Gun’ Kelly and the ‘Birdman’ Robert Stroud were held prison in the federal penitentiary. Ten years before the first tour the Anglin Brothers and prisoner Frank Morris escaped from the maximum security prison. Till then, it was assumed nobody could be able to do so. Shortly after the escape, the prison doors closed.

Historic Landmark
In November 1969 Alcatraz was occupied by a group of Native Americans who were part of a wave of Native activism. In 1972 Alcatraz became a national park and it even got the designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1986.

360 trivial fact
Escaping Alcatraz was considered impossible. Swimming to the mainland was unsurvivable according to federal officials. However, it did happen. In 1962 John Paul Scott greased himself, squeezed through a window and swam to shore. Too bad for him; the police discovered him lying unconscious at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge. Nowadays, hundreds of people swim the 1.5 miles during the annual Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.
